Operations & Maintenance

Energy-from-Waste (EfW)

ECOVE constantly advances our operations and maintenance process, increasing our municipal trash processing capacity and generating renewable energy with ever increasing efficiency.

ECOVE is a leading operations and maintenance (O&M) service provider in the EfW sector. Through effective maintenance, advancement and upgrading of plant technology and equipment, we generated nearly 30% more electricity per ton of waste in 2016 than in 1995, supplying renewable energy to over 300,000 households across Taiwan and Macau — without compromising workplace safety or environmental health. We have experience operating EfW plants with waste processing capacities ranging from 80 tons/day to 3,000 tons/day. Currently, we run nine large-scale EfW plants — seven in Taiwan and two in Macau — with a total processing capacity of over 8,000 tons/day. Our operations mainly handle commercial and municipal waste; however, we also process medical waste, hazardous waste, organic solvent, wastewater sludge, and sewage. Our service scope includes operations and maintenance, facility development, records and reporting, and public education.

Experience and Management Excellence

Using twenty years of accumulated knowledge and industry know-how, we have assembled a highly skilled team of technicians and operators to run EfW plants safely and efficiently. We employ proprietary technology to collect nearly two billion data points every day across all of our operations. ECOVE specialists then carefully analyze trends and anomalies in the data to reduce chemical consumption, improve air quality, and deliver improvements in plant efficiency, such as increasing steam output, increasing operating rate, and increasing power generation efficiency.

Knowledge and Skills

We have extensive knowledge on equipment and systems at every stage of the process and across major providers. Our advanced automatic combustion systems are in operation with various grates, giving us in-depth knowledge of how changing inputs can increase the efficiency of operational output. The types of grates we operate include:

  • Step-Reciprocating Grate
  • Reverse Acting Grate
  • Roller Grate
  • Fluidized Bed
  • Rotary Kiln

Technical Innovation

We have received over 30 patents in EfW plant systems technology. These technologies have improved the efficiency of the following systems: the combustion gas supply system, the combustion control system, the hazardous and infectious waste disposal system, the treatment system, and the purification system. At ECOVE, we are constantly developing innovative technologies to improve performance.

The following is a sample of advancements and results we have achieved:

  • We streamlined our manufacturing process — reducing the use of De-NOx chemicals by over 50%, saving TWD 3,350,000 (USD 111,251) per year at the Wujih EfW Plant.
  • We installed a high-efficiency variable-frequency drive — saving 149MWh of electricity per year, reducing carbon emissions by 790 tons, and saving TWD 2,830,000 (USD 93,982) per year at the Miaoli EfW Plant.
  • We installed air purification control devices — improving air quality, including a reduction of PM2.5 emissions by 50% at both the Wujih and Houli EfW Plants.
  • We installed an Advanced Clad Tube and Pipe (ACT&P) — reducing carbon emissions by 4,000 tons per year and increasing annual revenue by TWD 6,900,000 (USD 229,144) at both the Tainan and Miaoli EfW Plants.

Featured Projects

Macau EfW Plant, Macau, China

Macau’s first refuse waste incineration center was completed in 2007. The center handles municipal, commercial and industrial waste and incinerates 1,728 metric tons of waste per day across 6 furnaces.

Taonan EfW Plant, Taoyuan, Taiwan

The Taonan EfW plant was completed in 2001. The plant has the largest single furnace in Taiwan, generating the highest power capacity. It handles 1,350 metric tons of general industrial and municipal waste per day. In 2016, it produced 211,745MWh, supplying enough energy for 67,900 households.

Xindian EfW Plant, New Taipei, Taiwan

The Xindian EfW plant was completed in 1994. The plant has received awards for excellence in operation for six consecutive years. In its 22 years of operations, it has never required any upgrades. It handles 900 metric tons of municipal waste per day. In 2016, it produced 63.44MWh, supplying 20,400 households with electricity.

Houli EfW Plant, Taichung, Taiwan

The Houli EfW plant was completed in 2000. ECOVE upgraded and enhanced the boiler to optimize the combustion control system, ensuring steady steam production. It handles 900 metric tons of municipal and general industrial waste daily. The Houli plant produced 143,376MWh in 2016, supplying enough electricity for 46,000 households.
